Tips on How to Save Money on Your Electricity Bills
The average American household spends over $1,300 each year on energy bills alone. That\'s a lot of money coursing through your heating vents, appliances and light bulbs. To learn how you can cut your energy costs significantly, keep reading for 7 great tips on how to save money on your electricity bills.
1. Check for drafts and air leaks.
Air leaks are a major cause of heat loss or the loss of conditioned and cooled air. To check for leaks, shut all your doors and windows. Then, light a candle and move it slowly around your doors and windows. If the candle\'s flame flickers, then you know have a leak. (Be very careful of the flame and dripping wax!)
Seal it up with caulking or weatherstripping.
2. Buy fluorescent light bulbs.
Replace all your incandescent light bulbs with energy-saving fluorescent ones. Initially, fluorescent bulbs cost more, but they use about a quarter of the energy and will last roughly 10-15 times longer. The month you replace your bulbs, you\'ll notice a significant reduction in your energy bills.
3. Opt for an energy audit.
Most states and energy utility companies offer free energy audit services. These audits mean an inspector will come to your house and evaluate your insulation, look for air leaks, check your seals and offer you concrete suggestions on how you can make your home more efficient and save you money.
4. Keep your vents and registers clear.
If you have a forced-air heating system, heat travels through your home via air ducts and registers. Keep these registers clean by vacuuming them out once or twice a season and make sure they\'re not blocked by furniture or drapery.
5. Wash your clothes in cold water.
Aside from very dirty clothes or whites that need to be pristinely white, you can see big savings by washing your clothes with cold or warm water. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, washing your clothes in cold water can save the average family about $50 a year.
6. Install a low-flow showerhead.
If you\'re unwilling to cut your shower time to less than five minutes, opt instead for a low-flow showerhead. By limiting the amount of water running through your shower, you\'ll also be limiting your monthly water bill.
7. Watch your chimney.
Don\'t let energy escape up the chimney. Make sure the damper is closed when the fireplace isn\'t being used, and inspect it every few years for leaks or damage.
